World Record: Syazrul Idrus takes first 7-fer in T20Is

Syazrul Idrus has etched his name in the history books as he became the first person to take 7-for in T20 Internationals.

Malaysian seamer Syazrul Idrus became the first player in T20I history to take seven wickets against China in Kuala Lumpur during the first game of the T20 World Cup Asia B Qualifier. Idrus kept swinging the ball towards the batters, taking all seven wickets.

Idrus finished with the greatest bowling figures in T20 cricket, 4-1-8-7. Colin Ackermann set the previous record in the 2019 Vitality Blast, going 7 for 18 for Leicestershire against Birmingham Bears.

Peter Aho’s T20 international record was broken by Idrus. While playing for Nigeria in 2021, Aho went 6 for 5 against Sierra Leone. Deepak Chahar of India owns the full-member record, with his 6 for 7 against Bangladesh in 2019 ranking joint-third overall with Dinesh Nakrani of Uganda, who did the same against Lesotho in 2021.

China vs Malaysia

China had reached 12 for no loss in four overs after winning the toss and deciding to bat. Idrus claimed his first wicket. Syazrul Idrus came in as the first bowling change and struck Wang Liuyang for three runs with the first ball of his second over. In the following over, he took three more wickets. In his third over, he took another wicket.

Idrus’ final over, a maiden, yielded two more wickets, bringing China’s total to 20 for 9 after nine overs. Soon after, Vijay Unni caught Luo Shilin lbw to close the innings on 23.

Malaysia, in retaliation, lost their openers early as well, falling to 3 for 2 after two overs. In contrast, Virandeep Singh hit 19 off 14 balls with two fours and a six to help his team win in 4.5 overs.

China’s record

China was also mentioned in an infamous record. With their score of 23 runs on July 26, 2023, they now have the third-lowest total in T20I history. The two lower scores ahead of China’s 23 are the Isle of Man (10) vs. Spain in February 2023 and Turkey (21) vs. Czech Republic in August 2019.

China’s batting difficulties continued on July 27th, as they were removed for a low score of just 26 runs, the joint fourth-lowest total in ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Asia B Qualifier history.
