India’s batting once again let them down, as they crumbled like a pack of cards in a low-scoring Women’s T20 World Cup warm-up match against Australia on Monday.
When given the opportunity to bowl, the Indian bowlers annihilated Australia’s top order, but tailenders Georgia Wareham (32) and Jess Jonassen (22) unbroken 50-run partnership propelled Australia to 129 for 8.
In response, the Indian hitters were dismissed for 85 runs in 16 overs.
India’s batting fell short for the second time in a row. The ‘Ladies in Blue’ experienced a similar collapse in the Tri-Series final versus South Africa last week.
Darcie Brown (4/17) was the wrecker-in-chief, destroying the Indian top order with crucial scalps of Shafali Verma (2), Smriti Mandhana (0), and Richa Ghosh (5).
Jemimah Rodrigues, who opened the innings alongside Shafali, continued her poor form by being out for nought, while skipper Harmanpreet Kaur did not bat.
Harleen Doel (12) showed some determination, hitting two fours before being run out, while Deepti Sharma was the top scorer, remaining unbroken on 19. She may have pushed India over the edge if someone had stuck with her until the end.
Shikha Pandey (2/9) struck in her first two overs to dismiss Australia captain Meg Lanning (0) and Tahlia McGrath (2).
Ellyse Perry (1) was run out by Radha Yadav as Australia was reeling at 10 for 3.
Pooja Vastrakar (2/16) and Radha Yadav (2/22) ripped through the middle order, with Ash Gardner (22) and Beth Mooney (28) providing some resistance.
Renuka Singh, who had a bad day, was India’s most expensive bowler, conceding 39 runs in three overs.
The Indians, however, were unable to break the combination of Wareham and Jonassen, who combined for five fours and three sixes.
