The much-awaited inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) will be played from March 4 to 26 in Mumbai. The Brabourne Stadium and the DY Patil Stadium will host all the matches with the tournament opener expected to be played between Gujarat Giants and Mumbai Indians-owned franchise. “The Women’s Premier League will be played from March 4 to 26 in Mumbai,” IPL chairman Arun Dhumal told PTI on Monday.
Dhumal also informed that the auction will take place on February 13, the day after India’s T20 World Cup encounter against Pakistan.
The WPL is the world’s second largest T20 league, trailing only the Indian Premier League, with five teams earning Rs 4669.99 crore and the BCCI selling media rights for Rs 951 crore.
Capri Global Holdings (Lucknow) and Adani Sportsline have purchased the five franchises, in addition to the three IPL team owners (Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Delhi Capitals).
The league has received approximately 1500 registrations, and the final roster is scheduled to be published later this week.
At the next month’s player auction, each side will have a Rs 12 crore budget to spend on a minimum of 15 and a maximum of 18 players. Up to five foreign players, including one from an associate member country, will be permitted in the starting lineup.
The inaugural season will have 22 games, with the top-ranked team in the league stage advancing directly to the final. The second and third placed teams will compete for a spot in the championship game.
