The International Cricket Council (ICC) introduced demerit points in cricket in September 2016. Regarding the ICC Code of Conduct, it was decided to implement demerit points.
Cricket players are penalised with these demerit points for a variety of violations they commit. Four levels have been added to this classification of offences. Any cricketer who accrues four demerit points in a 24-month period is penalised by the ICC. A player is suspended for one test match or two white ball games if they receive four demerit points in two years.
How are demerit points given?
The penalties for the players vary depending on the four levels of the crime. A player receives one or two demerit points for a level 1 transgression. A player receives three or four demerit points for a level 2 transgression. A player receives five or six demerit points for a level 3 transgression. 7-8 demerit points are assessed to a player for a level four transgression.
The umpire typically informs the match referees of these situations. Depending on the seriousness of the occurrence, the match referee will next award these demerit points. Eight demerit points during a two-year period will result in a player’s punishment being doubled. The engaged player and the team have the right to appeal the match referee’s ruling, which results in a hearing.
Ravindra Jadeja
Demerit points have a history with the top Indian all-rounder. In the second test, which was held in Nagpur as part of the recently ended Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Jadeja received a demerit point.
Jadeja’s use of an anti-inflammatory lotion on his fingertips while bowling on Day 1 constituted a category 1 offence.
According to a statement from the ICC addressing the event, “The Match Referee was satisfied that the cream was administered to the finger solely for medical grounds in coming to his decision to sanction the player along with the Level 1 sanction he imposed. Since the cream was not put into the ball as an artificial product, the ball’s condition was unaffected.
It’s interesting to note that the ICC has penalised Jadeja with demerit points before. Jadeja received three demerit points in 2017 during a match against Sri Lanka for throwing the ball dangerously at the batsman Malinda Pushpakumara. Jadeja was barred from participating in test matches after accruing a total of six demerit points over a two-year period as a result of the three demerit points. Jadeja received three demerit points for running onto the pitch during a match against England in October 2016.
