In cricket practice nets, a bowling machine is a crucial piece of equipment, especially for batsmen. It is a mechanical apparatus that produces reliable deliveries by simulating the motion of a bowler. Without relying on a human bowler, these devices let batsmen practise various delivery styles. Due to their adjustability, bowling lanes can vary in pace, line, and length to replicate various bowling techniques. They help batters hone their abilities by assisting in the development of timing, footwork, and stroke selection.

In order to simulate the conditions of a cricket pitch, pitch mats, often referred to as synthetic mats, are laid out on the practice net surface. The bounce and pace of a natural wicket are replicated by these mats, allowing batsmen and bowlers to adjust their techniques accordingly. For rehearsing on flat tracks or getting ready for certain playing situations, such as seaming or spinning tracks, pitch mats are especially helpful.

  • Cones as targets

Cones and occasionally even shoes are used by bowlers to practise their accuracy of line and length. Typically, these cones are positioned at yorker length. Some outstanding bowlers, including Lasith Malinga, practised their yorker lengths while wearing shoes placed on the batting crease. Malinga was a death bowler who frequently used yorkers, whether they were fast or slow-paced.

  • Catching Cradle

A tool used to enhance catching abilities is a catching cradle. Usually, it comprises of two poles that are different heights with a net strung between them. Fielders work on their hand-eye coordination and reflexes by practising diving catches, low catches, and high catches.

  • Speed Gun/Radar Gun

The speed of a bowler’s ball delivery is measured using a speed gun or radar gun. It aids batters in adjusting to various bowling speeds while also assisting bowlers in keeping track of their pace and accuracy.
