Cricket West Indies (CWI) has revealed the 15-player squad that will embark on a tour to Australia in October. This exciting series includes three T20Is and three ODIs. The squad remains unchanged after the West Indies Women’s impressive clean sweep against Ireland Women in both the CG United ODI Series and T20I Series in Saint Lucia earlier this summer. Captain Hayley Matthews will lead the team during the tour, which will also mark the debut of the new Head Coach, Shane Deitz, who joined the West Indies team at the end of August, as confirmed by CWI.
The addition of four young talents, known as the ‘Rising Stars’ – Ashmini Munisar, Djenaba Joseph, Zaida James, and Jannillea Glasgow – provides an exciting opportunity for these budding players to test their skills against the reigning T20I and 50-Over World Champions, Australia.
Ann Browne-John, the Lead Selector for Women’s cricket, stated, “The selection panel has chosen to maintain most of the players who were victorious in the home series against Ireland. Jannillea Glasgow, who had an outstanding performance in the Rising Stars Women’s Under 19 tournament, has earned her place in the 15-member squad, and we welcome back Karishma Ramharack.”
Browne-John added, “This team represents our commitment to the growth of women’s cricket in a rapidly evolving landscape. We have faith in the development of several players, some of whom have recently excelled in the Massy Caribbean Premier League. We expect them to maintain their excellent form. Under the guidance of the new Head Coach and led by Captain Hayley Matthews, who is having a highly productive 2023, we believe this team can compete strongly against a top-tier team like Australia.”
The ODI series against Australia is West Indies’ fourth fixture in the ICC Women’s Championship 2022-2025, following matches against New Zealand, England, and Ireland. Each match offers West Indies a chance to earn crucial points in the Championship standings, where they currently hold the 9th position out of ten teams. After the Australia Series, West Indies Women will participate in four more three-match ODI series over the next two years. At the end of this cycle, the top five teams in the ICC Women’s Championship and host India will secure a spot in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in 2025, while the remaining teams will go through the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier.
