Virat Kohli’s Fitness Supremacy Challenged as Shubman Gill Tops Yo-Yo Test Charts

Shubman Gill’s exceptional yo-yo test score shines light on India’s Asia Cup preparations. Virat Kohli’s Instagram post faces scrutiny, while the upcoming tournament gains significance for India’s World Cup readiness.

As India readies itself for the upcoming Asia Cup, their preparations are in full swing at a private training camp in Alur. The team members are actively taking part in regular fitness assessments, a crucial part of their preparation for the continental championship set to start on August 30. Among the various tests, the yo-yo test stands out, and young opener Shubman Gill has taken the lead by achieving an impressive score of 18.7.

Notably, all the cricketers who have undergone the yo-yo test have met the required minimum score of 16.5, showing their commitment to maintaining peak fitness levels. Even Indian captain Virat Kohli demonstrated his dedication by sharing a respectable score of 17.2 on his Instagram story. The fitness evaluations have been thorough, except for a few players—Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna, Tilak Varma, Sanju Samson (a backup player for the Asia Cup), and KL Rahul—who are yet to complete the crucial Yo-Yo test.

“The yo-yo test is an endurance fitness test, and scores might vary based on recent workload and activity levels. As of now, Gill holds the highest score of 18.7, while most players have scored between 16.5 and 18,” shared a BCCI source anonymously with Press.

On Friday, Indian Express reported that Virat Kohli‘s Instagram story revealing his yo-yo fitness test score had raised concerns among higher-ups at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Following the attention Kohli’s post garnered, the Indian team management swiftly issued strong guidelines for all Indian cricketers, instructing them not to publicly share their Yo-Yo test scores.

According to the report, this directive was verbally communicated to all cricketers currently participating in an intensive fitness and preparatory camp in Alur, Bengaluru.

Asia Cup Holds Crucial Importance for World Cup Preparations The imminent Asia Cup holds immense significance for India’s World Cup preparations, starting with a match against arch-rivals Pakistan on September 2. There’s a possibility of these two teams clashing up to three times during the tournament. Following the Asia Cup, India is set to play three ODIs against Australia just before the major global tournament. Their campaign against Australia begins on October 8.
