
The Indian Premier League (IPL) has witnessed many young cricketers becoming captains and proving their leadership skills at an early age. Here’s a look at five of the youngest players to lead an IPL team.
1. Virat Kohli
Virat Kohli showcased his leadership potential early by captaining India to victory in the 2008 U-19 World Cup. But, in a star-studded Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) squad providing legends like Anil Kumble, Kevin Pietersen, and Rahul Dravid, he had to look forward to his chance. In IPL 2011 an injury to Daniel Vettori gave Kohli his first captaincy opportunity at just 22 years, 4 months, and 6 days old. He led RCB in three matches, winning two. In 2013, he was appointed full-time captain, a position he held until 2021.
2. Shreyas Iyer
Shreyas Iyer took charge of Delhi Capitals’ captaincy in IPL 2018 when Gautam Gambhir stepped down mid-season. At just 23 years, 3 months, and 21 days old, he made an immediate impact, scoring an unbeaten 93 in his first fit as captain. under his leadership, Delhi reached the playoffs in 2019 after a seven-year gap and made it to their first-ever IPL final in 2020, though they lost to the Mumbai Indians. Later, Iyer moved to Kolkata Knight Riders and led them to an IPL title in 2024.
3. Suresh Raina
Suresh Raina, known as MS Dhoni’s right-hand man at Chennai Super Kings (CSK), took charge of the team in IPL 2010 for a match against Delhi Daredevils while Dhoni became unavailable. At 23 years, 3 months, and 22 days old, Raina led CSK to victory, contributing 49 runs in a successful chase. When CSK became suspended in 2016 and 2017, Raina captained the Gujarat Lions, leading them to the top of the league stage in 2016 before falling quick in the playoffs.
4. Steve Smith
Steve Smith made a name for himself as an IPL captain at a young age. He first led the Pune Warriors India in 2012 before taking charge of the Rajasthan Royals in 2015. Later, he became named the captain of the rising Pune Supergiant, where he led them to the IPL very last in 2017. His strategic acumen and leadership features helped his groups stay competitive in the league.
5. Riyan Parag
In IPL 2025, Riyan Parag is about to lead Rajasthan Royals for the first three matches while regular captain Sanju Samson recovers from a finger injury. Despite the presence of skilled players in the squad, the franchise has placed its agrees with Parag’s leadership abilities.
