US International Cricket Team: Overview, History, Records and Analysis

Get to know about the US National Cricket team and the way they have performed in the international matches and formats until now.

The American national cricket team represents the country in international cricket. The United States of America Cricket Association (USACA), which took over management of the squad in 1965, became an associate member of the International Cricket Council (ICC). The USACA was expelled by the ICC in June 2017 due to issues with governance and finances. Before a new sanctioning body could be established, ICC Americas temporarily took control of the American team. In January 2019, USA Cricket officially became an associate member.

In the first ever international cricket match, the United States sent a team to face Canada in 1844. Over a century and a half, the American national team participated in only a few international competitions. It frequently competed against teams from Canada (at the annual Auty Cup) or other nations that were on tour.

The United States made its international debut at the 1979 ICC Trophy in England, and since then, it has only missed two editions of the competition (now known as the World Cup Qualifier). The side took part in its first two One Day International (ODI) contests after taking first place in the 2004 ICC Six Nations Challenge, which earned them a spot in the 2004 ICC Champions Trophy. The ICC’s Cricket World Cup League 2 would give each of the team’s games ODI status. The first local ODI series began on September 13 with the team hosting Namibia and Papua New Guinea.

The 21st Century is from 2000 to 2009

The USA’s sixth place showing in the 2001 ICC Trophy became their highest-ever placing. They have additionally competed in every ICC Americas Championship, winning the competition in 2002. The American cricket squad took part in a first-class match in 2004 as part of the inaugural ICC Intercontinental Cup. The recent competitions with Canada and Bermuda marked the start of something new. The squad won the ICC 6 Nations Challenge after defeating Scotland, Namibia, the Netherlands, and the UAE by a margin of 0.028 runs on net run rate. They won the ICC Six Nations in 2004, which allowed them to compete in the ICC Champions Trophy in England. The USA and New Zealand faced off in their first One Day International encounter on September 10, 2004, at The Oval.

2010 – 2015 Years

The USA finished second in Division Five in 2010 and received promotion to Division Four despite falling to Nepal in the title game. They boosted their ascension even more by winning Division Four in 2010 and thrashing Italy in the final. They had been promoted to Division Three in 2011, where they had placed last, and were then demoted there in 2012. They were promoted back to Division Three for 2013 as a result of their second-place performance. When they finished third in 2013 and were still in Division Three the following year, they were demoted.

2014 Cancellation

On June 26, 2015, the ICC once more suspended USACA. This time, the reason for the suspension was “severe concerns regarding the governance, finances, reputation, and cricketing activities of USACA” that had been brought up during the ICC assessment. This suspension does not effect National Team games, but it does stop ICC funding and USACA from approving any events held in the nation (although the ICC can still approve events held in the United States). This ban will remain in effect until USACA can show that “conditions relating to governance, funding, and its cricket activities” have altered, according to the ICC.

Since 2017, I’ve switched to USA Cricket and Cricket World Cup League 2. The American national team, in December 2017, on a trip in the Middle East. The ICC Full Council unanimously resolved to abolish the USACA on June 22, 2017, during the ICC Annual Conference in London, in response to a Board recommendation from April and a recent Dispute Resolution Committee hearing before Michael Beloff, which was concluded in June 2017. This included refusing to approve a constitution that had received ICC support. In January 2019, the International Cricket Council (ICC) formally approved USA Cricket as a new associate member.

All ICC members received the Twenty20 International (T20I) status as of 2019. The United States played the United Arab Emirates in its inaugural T20 International match on March 15, 2019, at the ICC Academy Ground in Dubai.
