India has become a dominant force in international cricket. The team will be among the favourites in all three forms prior to each series or tournament. The establishment of the Indian Premier League in 2008 has also contributed to the growth of the sport in India and worldwide.
They’ll keep playing entertaining and attacking cricket in the future, but how much do you know about India’s team and players?
Multiple World Champions
The 50-Over World Cup, which will be held later this year, will be India’s next major challenge. The greatest ODI sides will compete for the trophy from October 5th to November 19th, and the fact that the tournament will be hosted on Indian soil helps to make the home side the favourites.
India currently leads a following pack that includes Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan, and the defending champions England.
Indian teams have previously won the World Cup on two occasions. The first came in 1983 when a team led by Kapil Dev overcame the formidable West Indies. MS Dhoni led the team to their second victory in this tournament in 2011.
India also won the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, making them world champions in both limited-overs formats.
The Greatest of All Time
In all sports, there is a dispute about who is the GOAT – the best of all time. In cricket, the argument is debatable, but statistics point to one outstanding Indian batsman. Sachin Tendulkar has scored the most international runs and struck the most international centuries of any player.
He made his national team debut in a test match against Pakistan in 1989, and he retired 14 years later while still at the peak of his powers. Tendulkar scored 34,357 runs and hit 100 international hundreds.
Shikhar’s Starring Role
Indian cricket and Bollywood go hand in hand in the present era. When the IPL first began, a number of individuals in the film industry became interested in club ownership. Two instances are Shah Rukh Khan of the Kolkata Knight Riders and Preity Zinta of the Punjab Kings.
In return, Indian cricketers have helped to strengthen Bollywood. Among those who have appeared are Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Yuvraj Singh, and Vinod Kambli. Shikhar Dhawan, a member of the current Indian squad, made his Bollywood debut in the film Double XL in 2022.
Rohit’s Records
Current Indian captain Rohit Sharma is a prolific run scorer across all formats of the game, but he excels in One Day Internationals. Rohit is a record breaker in this format, with the greatest ODI score of all time among his achievements.
India’s captain hit a jaw-dropping 264 against Sri Lanka in Kolkata in 2014, and he is also the only man to have three international double-hundreds in this format. Those are remarkable numbers, and they highlight Rohit Sharma’s ability in shorter forms.
Kohli’s Car Collection
Many high-paid athletes, including great cricketers, like to spend money on flashy cars. There is significant competition among the Indian team here, but it will be difficult to top the collection of former captain Virat Kohli.
Kohli owns two versions of the top-of-the-line Audi 8, as well as Range Rovers and a relatively basic Renault Duster.
Dhoni’s Dismissals
MS Dhoni, the legendary Indian wicketkeeper, continues to garner large crowds in the IPL. When we reflect on his international career, he will be remembered primarily as a great leader and a daring hitter, but his keeping was vastly underappreciated.
Dhoni possesses two One Day International records. His six dismissals against England in 2007 are the most ever, while his 183 against Sri Lanka in 2005 is a record total for a wicketkeeper.
Cricketing Brothers
Sets of siblings may have been frequent in some cricketing countries, but they are very uncommon in India. In the present era, Hardik and Krunal Pandya are defying the trend.
Hardik Pandya is the more successful of the two brothers and an essential player of the team in all formats. Krunal Pandya is a capable hitter and left-arm spinner who has appeared in only 24 limited-overs internationals.
The current Indian team will continue to create new records in cricket, while their celebrity status will increase their recognition.
For the time being, the focus is squarely on the cricket pitch, where a world cup is at stake. When they have some downtime, these renowned players will begin to generate some more headlines off the field.
