The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has confirmed the appointment of former cricketing stars Umar Gul and Saeed Ajmal as the fast bowling and spin bowling coaches, respectively, for the men’s national team.
According to a statement by the PCB, the newly appointed coaching duo will commence their roles during the Test series against Australia from December 14, 2023, to January 7, 2024, and the subsequent T20I series against New Zealand from January 12 to 21, 2024.
This decision comes after the overhaul of the team’s management and coaching staff following Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023. Mohammad Hafeez is now the team director, Wahab Riaz serves as the chief selector, while Shan Masood and Shaheen Afridi were appointed as Test and T20 captains, respectively.
Umar Gul, who previously held the role of bowling coach for the men’s team during the T20I series against Afghanistan and New Zealand, expressed his pleasure in joining as the bowling coach. He aims to contribute his coaching expertise to enhance Pakistan’s bowling capabilities.
Meanwhile, Saeed Ajmal, the former world no. 1 ODI bowler with an impressive record across formats, is honored to take on the role of spin bowling coach. His vast experience, including coaching with Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), will be pivotal in bolstering the national team’s spin bowling talent.
Both Gul and Ajmal expressed gratitude to Chairman PCB Management Committee Zaka Ashraf for the opportunity to contribute to Pakistan cricket and are enthusiastic about developing and enhancing the bowling arsenal of the team.
