
As WPL 2023 has kicked off from March 4 and performed extremely well across the world, we’ll discuss some other cricket leagues that has been an integral part of women’s cricket.
There are several domestic and international leagues for women cricketers that provide opportunities for players to showcase their skills and compete at a high level. Some of the most popular leagues include:
Women’s Big Bash League (Australia):
The Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) is a professional Twenty20 cricket league for women in Australia. It was established in 2015 and has grown in popularity over the years. The league features eight teams representing different cities across the country, and the matches are played during the Australian summer season, from October to December.
The WBBL has been a key driver in the growth of women’s cricket in Australia, with many top international players from around the world participating in the league. It has also helped to inspire a new generation of female cricketers and has contributed to the overall development of the sport in the country.
Kia Super League (England):
The KSL was a women’s Twenty20 cricket competition in England, established in 2016 and disbanded in 2019.
The league was a women’s Twenty20 cricket competition that ran from 2016 to 2019, featuring six regional teams from England and Wales. However, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) decided to replace the league with a new women’s domestic competition called The Hundred, which began in 2020. The Hundred features eight city-based teams, both men’s and women’s, and is played in a new format consisting of 100 balls per innings.
Women’s T20 Challenge (India):
The Women’s T20 Challenge is a professional Twenty20 cricket league in India for women’s cricket teams. The tournament was first held in 2018 and is played alongside the Indian Premier League (IPL) men’s tournament.
The Women’s T20 Challenge consists of three teams, each representing a different city in India. The teams are named after their respective cities: Supernovas (representing Jaipur), Trailblazers (representing Mumbai), and Velocity (representing Kolkata).
The tournament is a round-robin format, with each team playing two matches against the other two teams. The top two teams in the league table then face each other in the final.
The Hundred Women’s Competition (England):
The Hundred Women’s Competition is a professional Twenty20 cricket league for women’s teams in England and Wales. It was launched in 2021 as part of a new regional structure called The Hundred, which also includes a men’s competition. The competition features eight teams representing different regions of England, and it is operated by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).
Each team in The Hundred Women’s Competition is allowed to field up to three overseas players, which provides an opportunity for international players to play in England. The competition has a unique format, with each team playing 100 balls per innings instead of the traditional 20 overs. This means that each innings lasts 100 balls, with 25 balls bowled from one end and then 25 balls from the other end.
Women’s Super Smash (New Zealand)
The Women’s Super Smash is a domestic Twenty20 cricket competition for women’s teams in New Zealand. The competition was launched in the 2015-16 season and is organized by New Zealand Cricket. The Women’s Super Smash features six teams representing different regions of New Zealand, and it is played in a round-robin format, followed by a knockout stage.
The Women’s Super Smash has been played every year since its inception, and it has played a significant role in promoting women’s cricket in New Zealand. Many of the top domestic players, as well as international stars, participate in the competition, which helps to improve the standard of cricket in New Zealand and develop young talent.
Women’s Caribbean Premier League
The 2022 Women’s Caribbean Premier League, also known as the Massy WCPL 2022 for sponsorship reasons, was the debut season of the Women’s Caribbean Premier League, a domestic Twenty20 women’s cricket event held in the West Indies. The tournament was held from August 31 to September 4, 2022, with all matches taking place in Saint Kitts. The competition was preceded by The Sixty, a T10 tournament. Trinbago Knight Riders won the competition.
