The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced a new method for determining the victor of a tied game in 2009. Bowl Outs were phased out in favour of the new Super Over. In a Super Over, each side plays out an inning of one over during the game. In the Super Over, the side that batted second, or was chasing the target, will get to bat first. The top five Super Over performances in cricket history will be discussed in this article.
Rohit Sharma vs New Zealand
Rohit Sharma gave a superb and effective performance, changing the game in India’s favour in the space of just two balls. India and New Zealand’s third T20I in 2020 finished in a draw and went to a super over. Rohit’s outstanding performance helped India score 179 runs in the first innings. In just 40 balls, the opener scored 65 runs. Kane Williamson, the New Zealand captain who was chasing, nearly chased down the total when he hit 95 runs in just 48 balls, but the game ended in a tie.
Batting first, New Zealand scored 17 runs in the Super Over thanks to Williamson’s 11 runs in just four balls. KL Rahul and Rohit started the batting for India. With Rohit on strike, the Indian team needed 10 runs off the final two balls after scoring eight runs off the first four balls. Rohit first hammered a six over the long-on boundary and then another six over the long-off boundary.
Logan van Beek vs West Indies
When he recorded the highest individual total in Super Overs, Logan van Beek shocked the entire world. This is the most recent miracle to occur in the Super Over era. West Indies scored 374 runs in the first innings of the World Cup 2023 Qualifier thanks to Nicholas Pooran’s century. In just 65 balls, the left-handed batter scored 104 runs. Teja Nidamanuru and skipper Scott Edwards’ century partnership allowed the Netherlands to enter the contest. Logan van Beek’s cameo during the chase helped the Netherlands almost succeed.
Logan van Beek hit 30 runs in the Super Over while batting first, smashing three sixes and three fours off the bowling of Jason Holder. The West Indies team never gave the impression that they would be able to surpass the enormous total.
Sunil Narine vs Trinidad and Tobago
In the 2014 Caribbean Premier League, Sunil Narine set a record that might never be surpassed. Narine delivered his first super over. First, to bat, Trinidad & Tobago only managed to score 118 runs. Amazon Guyana Warriors were unable to successfully complete the total after losing multiple wickets in quick succession.
Guyana Warriors scored 11 runs in the Super Over, and with only 12 runs needed to win, the game was still in the balance. In the Super Over, Narine entered the game to bowl against a youthful Nicholas Pooran. The seasoned spinner bowled off-spin deliveries that swerved out of the reach of the left-handed batter. The plays and misses on the first four balls were remarkably identical. Finally connecting on the fifth ball, Pooran was only able to loft it towards Martin Guptill for a catch. The final ball of the Super Over also produced a dot, meaning that Narine had delivered a wicket-maiden Super Over.
Yusuf Pathan vs Kolkata Knight Riders
The Indian Premier League’s inaugural Super Over did not fall short of expectations. Yusuf Pathan single-handedly led the Rajasthan Royals to victory against Kolkata Knight Riders in the match. Yusuf Pathan’s cameo, in which he scored 42 runs in just 21 balls, helped the Royals score 150 runs in the first inning. In response, Chris Gayle and Sourav Ganguly each scored 40+ scores to help KKR draw the game.
Gayle and McCullum batted for KKR in the Super Over and scored 15 runs. Pathan, who batted for RR, faced Ajantha Mendis. Pathan won the game for RR by scoring 18 runs in only four balls.
Chris Gayle vs New Zealand
This list had to include Chris Gayle. The hard-hitting master has built a reputation for himself over the years because of his capacity for hitting maximums. This was international cricket’s first-ever Super Over. First, to bat, New Zealand scored 155 runs. Chris Gayle responded by scoring 67 runs in 41 balls, but without any help from the rest of the team, the game was tied.
Daniel Vettori bowled for New Zealand in the Super Over. Gayle scored 25 runs off six deliveries in the Super Over by slamming three sixes and a four. With a six to begin their Super Over, New Zealand was placed on the back foot as a wicket came off the third ball. West Indian bowler Sulieman Benn threw a waist-high no-ball, which Ross Taylor smacked for a six. The next delivery, however, produced a wicket, meaning that New Zealand had lost both of their wickets and had fallen short of their target.
