Top 5 Controversial Dismissals in cricket history

Cricket despite being known as a gentleman’s game is filled with controversies. Here is a look at the top 5 controversial dismissals in cricket history.

Cricket, which is known for upholding sportsmanship and is occasionally thought of as a gentleman’s game, was unable to avoid the limelight. There have been occasions when specific cricket plays have shaped opinions and generated a lot of conversation. These debates were focused on a player’s performance, a rule violation, or a failure to uphold the proper code of conduct. So let’s look at some of the most contentious dismissals in cricket history.

Sourav Ganguly vs Australia in 2008

The second test between Australia and India, which was already well-known for the “Monkeygate” event, became even more contentious and odd as a result of poor on-field decisions. During this game, Ganguly edged a ball from Brett Lee, and the ball ultimately fell into Michael Clarke’s hands at second slip. A replay showed that the ball had already touched the ground before entering Ganguly’s hands, proving that he was not out despite the fielder’s immediate celebration and the umpire’s declaration that Ganguly was out.

Jos Buttler Mankad in IPL 2019

Mankading is one of the most disputed methods of dismissing a batter, although being legal according to the cricket rulebook. Thus, when Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin used this strategy to dismiss English batter, Jos Buttler, it generated a great deal of debate and was perceived as going against the spirit of the game. Despite requests from the on-field umpires, Ashwin refused to modify his request for an appeal. It occurred while the Rajasthan Royals and Kings Eleven Punjab were playing.

Jonny Bairstow in Ashes 2023

England and Australia’s Ashes rivalry is renowned historically as a competitive matchup that includes several noteworthy incidents in each Ashes series. This wicket by Bairstow occurred during the second test match, which was chaotic in part because England lost the game. On July 2, 2023, after Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey smashed the stumps with a ball, Bairstow casually moved across the crease. The latter was ultimately given because, in the umpires’ judgement, the ball had not been declared dead.

Sachin Tendulkar vs Australia in 1999

The next disputed dismissal on this list was of Tendulkar during the 1999 India tour of Australia. When Glenn McGrath threw a short ball, Tendulkar ducked to avoid it, but the ball stayed low and smacked his shoulder. Tendulkar was ruled out following an LBW and an Australian appeal.

Stuart Broad in Ashes 2013

Technically not a dismissal, but controversial nonetheless. Stuart Broad of England was not declared out even though the ball had hit the edge during the first test of the 2013 Ashes series, according to the umpire. The bowler was Ashton Agar. The fact that the Australians ultimately lost this test match contributed to their displeasure with this decision.
