The sixth edition of The Hundred is scheduled to be played later this year. One can expect some high-quality cricket as has been the case in the previous five seasons.
The Change
Every league around the globe has to undergo certain changes in order to stay relevant among the masses, be it the IPL in India or the BBL in Australia; every major league has brought about some changes to adapt to the ever-changing demand of the game.
The Investment
One of the major changes that the new leagues, which are not more than three years old, like the SA20, have brought in private investments, with each of the six teams being owned by owners from India who own teams in the IPL as well.
The Trend
Following the trend England and Wales Cricket Board had already announced that they will transfer the ownership of the teams in the Hundred to private stakeholders; as a result, four of the eight teams will have a new identity from the upcoming season.

The Question
However, the biggest question is whether the change in ownership will also have an impact on the performance of the teams and the players. If yes, will the impact be negative or positive? If we go by the results of other leagues where private investment is present, it has taken the popularity of the league to another level, which is evidenced by the growth in viewership of the SA20, especially in a cricket-crazy nation like India.
The Expectations
One of the reasons why the popularity of the SA20 has been on the rise all around the globe, including India, is the quality of competition between bat and ball. The case in point is the last season of the SA20, which saw the majority of the games going right down to the wire.
The Performance
Like SA20, The Hundred, although got off to a slow start in terms of popularity as people took time in getting used to the new format but has dished out some highly competitive games in the last few seasons.
The Plan
Building on the success that the league has seen with time, the organisers have roped in private investment with four teams being owned by the owners who operate an IPL team as well in the hope of attracting audience in India.
The Knock
Having said that, merely seeking private investment won’t guarantee a rise in popularity and cricket has to take centre stage to draw eyeballs, which has been the case so far with The Hundred, as evident by some strong performances delivered by the batters.
