Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium: History

Vidarbha’s history with cricket begins in 1856, when two British Army Regiments stationed there played at Kamptee in the first-ever recorded cricket match. A group of British officers in Nagpur established the “OFFICERS CRICKET CLUB” in 1906. The Club was given a parcel of 4.5 acres of open land with All Saints Cathedral Church on its north side and the Methodist Church on its south side on a long-term lease basis by the then-British government. Soon, cricket practice and informal games became commonplace on this pitch. Cricket was introduced in schools and universities in Nagpur, Jabalpur, Akola, Amravati, and Raipur over the following several years. Other exclusive Clubs also emerged.

Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium: Pitch Report

The VCA Stadium’s pitches have favored quicker bowlers, but, like most of the country’s wickets, they have primarily benefited spinners. While early in the game, the batsmen found it relatively easy to score runs, the sweltering heat came into play, aiding the tweakers in demonstrating their superiority in the longest format at the stadium. But, it has been a while since the location’s last Test.
