Thamsyn Newton Announces Retirement From Cricket After 14 Years

Thamsyn Newton, the brilliant New Zealand female cricketer and multi-sport athlete, has formally retired from all varieties of cricket, marking the close of a distinguished 14-year career that played out across domestic and international grounds.

International Career Highlights

Thamsyn Newton played for New Zealand Women in 10 ODIs and 15 T20Is from 2015 to 2021. She was recognized for her aggressive top-order batting and medium-pace bowling. Newton delivered impressive performances on the global platform. Newton was a member of the White Ferns team for the 2016 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup and the 2017 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup.

Newton’s personal best performances are 3 for 9 against Sri Lanka in just her third T20I and a five-wicket performance against Pakistan in ODIs in November 2016.

Even after she last played an ODI in 2017, she was restored with her central contract by New Zealand in 2021 and was again in the T20I team for a short while.

In New Zealand’s 50-over domestic competition, the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield, Newton played in four finals:

2015 and 2017 with Canterbury (won once)

2022 and 2023 with Wellington (won once)

She subsequently transferred to Central Districts for the 2023-24 season and guided them into the final, losing narrowly to her previous team, Wellington.

Stints with Canterbury and Central Districts

Newton began her local career at Wellington in 2011-12, shifted to Canterbury between 2014 and 2018, and back to Wellington for another five years. She then shifted to Central Districts and retired from there, remaining an essential allrounder until the last season.

Experience in the WBBL

Thamsyn Newton also played in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) season while with the Perth Scorchers in the 2017-18 season, as well as proving herself in the Australian T20 domestic league.

Dual-Sport Player: Cricket and Rugby
