Tavengwa Mukuhlani, the long-serving chairman of Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC), has been elected officially as the chair of the Africa Cricket Association, after serving in an interim capacity since November 2024. The unanimous election was carried out at the ACA’s annual general meeting, attended in Singapore, where every one of the 23 member states elected him.
Africa Cricket Association’s Strategic Vision
ACA, under the stewardship of Mukuhlani, is ready to pursue a number of major initiatives that will shake up cricket across Africa. Top of the agenda are:
Introduction of an Africa T20 Competition: Long in the planning, this competition will deliver top-line T20 cricket action across African countries.
Revival of the Afro-Asia Cup: An eagerly awaited competition that will foster intercontinental cricketing relationships.
Cricket at the 2027 Africa Games: Following its 2023 introduction, cricket will feature again in the 2027 edition of the Africa Games in Egypt.
Africa Games: Growing Cricket’s Audience
Cricket debuted at the 2023 Africa Games in Ghana, where both the men’s and women’s titles were taken by Zimbabwe. South Africa sent development teams. Mukuhlani intends to further include cricket in the African Games to enhance its exposure and gather more funding for the ACA.
“These interactions are vital not only for exposure but also for unlocking new avenues of investment, policy backing and continental cooperation,” Mukuhlani noted, highlighting the sport’s increasing significance on the continent.
A Legacy of Strong Leadership in Zimbabwe Cricket
Mukuhlani became chairman of Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) in 2015. Mukuhlani has been reelected as chairman (a total of 3 consecutive elections) during a period of ZC’s transformation and related minor crises of professionalism. Here is a short list of occasions where Mukuhlani and ZC have shown remarkable resilience, mostly. Here are the top moments:
ZC curtailed its crippling financial liabilities.
ZC was suspended from the ICC as a result of its involvement in politics and restrictions.
ZC’s women’s national team accepted into the ICC’s Future Tours Programme; and
Mukuhlani appointed to ICC Finance and Commercial Affairs Committee, signifying a worldwide contribution to the game.
Challenges Remain for Zimbabwe’s Men’s Team
While ZC has taken some steps forward, Zimbabwe’s men’s national team has taken backward steps, not qualifying for the last two ODI and T20 World Cups. However, the men’s team will play in the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Namibia. Zimbabwe will co-host the 2026 ICC Men’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup to be played in Namibia.
A Promising Future Under Tavengwa Mukuhlani’s Leadership
With Tavengwa Mukuhlani officially in charge as chair of the Africa Cricket Association, African cricket enters a governance, expansion, and continental cohesion phase. The enforcement of a new memorandum of incorporation in the ACA holds the promise for greater transparency and improved governance frameworks in the future.
“We are here today at the start of a new chapter for African cricket, one characterized by firmer governance, greater opportunity and higher ambition,” Mukuhlani said.
