South Africa cricket team made their ODI debut in 1991, after returning from a two-decade ban due to apartheid. The Proteas have never won an ICC ODI World Cup title. Nevertheless, they have a good record in ODIs.

  1. 69 vs Australia, 1993

South Africa registered its lowest ODI total of 69 runs, which came against Australia in 1993 in Sydney. Australia batted first and put up a total of 172/9.  In reply, the Proteas batting order collapsed after losing captain Kepler Wessels. They went from 34/2 to 69 all out thanks to Aussie pacer Paul Reiffel’s figure of 4/13. Reiffel recorded remarkable figures of 8-4-13-4 as Australia won the game by 103 runs.

  1. 83 vs India, 2023 

South Africa was handed a huge defeat by India in their World Cup 2023 game in Kolkata. On a tough pitch for batting at the Eden Gardens, Virat Kohli made one of the best centuries of his ODI career to help India post a total 326.  In reply, the Protea batters could not withstand the lethal attack of India’s bowlers. Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja took a five-wicket haul as South Africa were bundled out for 83 runs. The highest score in their innings was 14 by Marco Jansen.

  1. 83 vs England, 2008 

In an ODI match in 2008 in Nottingham, England  knocked over the Proteas for 83 runs with the help of Stuart Broad’s five-wicket haul. Batting first, South Africa’s backbone collapsed as they lost five of their top seven to Broad and were eventually bundled out for 83 in one of its lowest totals in ODIs. The highest score in their innings was 13 by Andre Nel.  England openers Ian Bell and Matt Prior took 14.1 overs to chase down the targets.

  1. 83 vs England, 2022 

South Africa recorded one of its lowest totals in ODIs in 2022 when they were bowled out for 83 against the Three Lions in Manchester. In their chase of 202, the Proteas lost five wickets for only 27 runs to left-armers Reece Topley, David Willey and Sam Curran before spinners Adil Rashid and Moeen rest of the batters. England won the match by a mammoth margin of 118 runs.

  1. 99 vs India, 2022

In the third ODI match of the India vs South Africa series in 2022 in Delhi, the Proteas were decimated by spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who took four wickets for only 18 runs in 4.1 overs.  

Batting first, the Proteas were bundled out for 99 runs. Mohammed Siraj, Washington Sundar, and Shahbaz Ahmed took two wickets each for India. Heinrich Klaasen made the highest score for his side with 34, while no other batsman scored more than 20. India won the game by seven wickets in 19.1 overs.
