South Africa Appoints Eric Simons as Bowling Coach for Australia Series and Men’s ODI World Cup

Former South African fast-bowler, Eric Simons, has taken up the role of bowling coach for the South African cricket team. He will guide the team during the upcoming five-match ODI series against Australia and the Men’s ODI World Cup in India.

The decision to bring in Simons was confirmed by South Africa’s white-ball coach, Rob Walter, following a disappointing performance in the third T20I against Australia, resulting in a series loss of 3-0.

Previously, Rory Kleinveldt held the position on an interim basis, and Quinton Friend temporarily took up the role for the T20I series in Durban. “Eric has been working with us throughout the winter and will continue to be part of the team for the ODI series and the World Cup,” stated Walter.

Eric Simons, aged 61, has a rich cricket history, having represented South Africa in 23 ODIs. He also served as the head coach of the South African national team from 2002 to 2004, including during the 2003 Men’s ODI World Cup, which South Africa hosted.

Later in his career, Simons became the bowling consultant for the Indian cricket team, contributing to their victory in the 2011 Men’s ODI World Cup on home soil. Simons has an extensive coaching background, having been a bowling consultant for the Chennai Super Kings and other T20 franchises.

South Africa’s quest for a 50-over World Cup victory continues, with their best-ever performance being four semi-final appearances. They kick off their 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup campaign against the 1996 champions, Sri Lanka, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on October 7.
