Shubman Gill Narrows Gap on Babar Azam in ODI Batting Rankings

India’s Shubman Gill climbs ODI batting rankings, inching closer to Pakistan’s Babar Azam. A look at the latest rankings update.

In the latest update of the ODI Batting Rankings, there’s a significant development as Shubman Gill, the Indian cricket star, continues to close in on Pakistan’s captain Babar Azam. Gill’s exceptional performance in the ongoing ODI series against Australia has propelled him up the rankings.

Gill’s remarkable form in the first two matches of the series against Australia cannot be ignored. He has managed to accumulate an impressive total of 178 runs in these opening contests. His quickfire 74 in the series opener in Mohali was followed by a sensational century in Indore, marking his sixth ODI century and pushing him to a career-high rating in the updated list for ODI batters.

As per the latest rankings, Shubman Gill now holds a total of 847 rating points, trailing Babar Azam by just 10 rating points. It’s worth noting that this competition between the two talented batters will intensify as the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup approaches, set to begin on October 5th.

Interestingly, Babar Azam will enter the World Cup with the top batting ranking since Pakistan’s next official ODI match isn’t scheduled until the World Cup opener. This sets the stage for an exciting face-off between Babar and Gill during the tournament.

Rassie van der Dussen from South Africa currently holds the third spot on the batting rankings, but he’s more than 100 points behind the leading duo. Meanwhile, Ireland’s Harry Tector has risen to fourth place with a new career-high rating.

In addition to Gill’s rise, India’s Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul have also climbed up the rankings, thanks to their impressive performances against Australia. Meanwhile, Mohammed Siraj maintains his lead in the ODI bowlers’ list.

Siraj’s ascent to the top of the bowlers’ rankings was driven by his remarkable six-wicket haul during the Asia Cup final against Sri Lanka. Despite not featuring in the ODI series against Australia, he holds an 11-point lead over Australian seamer Josh Hazlewood at the summit of the rankings.

The ODI bowler rankings remain highly competitive, with just 55 rating points separating the top 10 players. Australia’s Adam Zampa has moved up to the seventh position after taking three wickets in the opening two matches against India.

Furthermore, India’s Mohammed Shami and Australia’s Sean Abbott have made notable progress on the list, along with Bangladesh’s Mustafizur Rahman, who improved to 23rd place after an impressive performance in the ODI series against New Zealand.
