Here are some of the lesser-known facts about Shane Warne:

  • In his youth, Shane excelled at the sport of Australian rules football. In 1987 and 1988, while the cricket season wasn’t in session, he was a member of the under-19 squad for St. Kilda Football Club.
  • Following the 2003 revelation that he had used a diuretic that his mother had given him to make himself look slimmer, he was banned from playing international cricket for an entire year.
  • His ex-girlfriend Elizabeth Hurley is a model and actress.
  • The fact that Warne was occasionally punished and had a drink didn’t help his image as a good kid; he was considered a bad apple.
  • For example, one of Warne’s most quotable sayings is, “Part of the art of bowling spin is to make the batsman think something spectacular is happening when it’s not.” It was often the case that his “mystery deliveries,” revealed in advance of each Ashes series, were little more than fabricated to intimidate the batting line-up.
  • Warne’s poor language, excessive physical contact with Marlon Samuels, and obvious displeasure with an umpire’s call during a Big Bash League encounter in early 2013 were all a result of his disagreement with the official’s call. There was a $4500 fine and a one-game suspension imposed on him.
