Shanaka replaces Glenn Phillips following the latter’s groin injury while fielding in a game against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Hyderabad more than ten days ago. Phillips is out of the tournament and has returned to New Zealand for rehabilitation. GT went back to an old acquaintance.

Shanaka was a member of the Gujarat Titans team in IPL 2023, when the franchise was the runner-up. Even though he played just three games that year, making a mere 26 runs and not delivering a single over, GT has now retained him for INR 75 lakh (approx. USD 87,800).

Phillips is not the sole significant loss for the Gujarat Titans this season. Previously, South African pace bowler Kagiso Rabada departed from the tournament on April 3 due to an “important personal matter.” GT has not announced a replacement for Rabada thus far, and it is not clear whether or when he might return.

Despite injury setbacks, the Gujarat Titans are going strong in IPL 2025, recording victories in four of six matches. They are in second place in the points table, building useful momentum as the league phase reaches its halfway point.

Next up, GT will face current table leaders Delhi Capitals in an exciting afternoon matchup at home on Saturday.

Shanaka replaces Glenn Phillips as Gujarat Titans look to keep their good IPL 2025 run going. With Shanaka back, GT will hope his experience and all-around skills bring extra depth to the team in the important times to come.
