India’s left-handed batsman, Tilak Varma, credited the pivotal role played by South African spinners Tabraiz Shamsi and captain Aiden Markram in their second T20I encounter. Varma emphasized that the duo’s exceptional spells were crucial in preventing the visitors from reaching a formidable total of 200 or more. Aiden Markram secured figures of 1-29, while Shamsi demonstrated economical bowling with figures of 1-18, contributing to South Africa’s five-wicket triumph in Gqeberha.

Speaking in the post-match press conference, Varma acknowledged the challenging conditions, with the pitch favoring spin and a slower pace. He noted the impact of the wet outfield and rain, making it tough for India to bowl during South Africa’s truncated chase of 152 in 15 overs. Despite the challenges, Varma praised the team’s batting performance, stressing the need for improved bowling strategies.

He highlighted the positive batting contributions from Surya, himself, and Rinku after the early setback with the openers. Varma’s 20-ball 29 added to India’s total of 180/7.

During the drinks break in the chase, Varma shared that the team’s discussion revolved around sticking to their plans, believing in their abilities, and maintaining focus on the basics. He referenced the team’s successful defense in wet conditions against Australia, instilling confidence in their ability to handle similar challenges.

Debuting for India in T20Is in 2023, Varma discussed the valuable experiences gained from playing in varied conditions across the West Indies, Ireland, China (Asian Games), and South Africa. He emphasized the importance of adapting to different conditions and expressed anticipation for continued growth and learning.
