SA20: Can Sunrisers Have A Hat-trick This Final?

Sunrisers Eastern Cape Eye Dream Three-Peat Against Mumbai Indians Cape Town in SA20 Final.

Defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape will look to make history at the Wanderers, (SA20) South Africa’s premier cricket venue, where they will contest the final against Mumbai Indians Cape Town in an eagerly awaited contest that marks a dramatic conclusion of the SA20 season.

A potential exciting finish for the clash will be witnessed when a packed crowd watches a new winner emerge or the same team takes home the title. This is actually a repeat of the season opener, as the SEC and MICT will vie for supremacy in a series of thrilling performances.

The stage is set for an electrifying final, and SEC, led by captain Aiden Markram, will look to defend their title. Despite having to play three matches in four days, including the Eliminator and Qualifier 2, SEC has managed to maintain its momentum. Markram acknowledged the physical and mental toll of the hectic schedule but remains confident in his team’s ability to rise to the occasion.

On the other hand, MICT comes into the final well-rested after a three-day break. With Rashid Khan leading the side, MICT’s turnaround from bottom finishers in previous seasons to top contenders in this edition has been remarkable.

Their clinical performance in the group stage, with seven wins from ten matches, places them as formidable opponents. They will look to capitalize on their squad depth, particularly with players familiar with the Wanderers’ conditions.

The other aspect of the two finalists is in their opening combinations. MICT’s opening pair, Ryan Rickelton, and Rassie van der Dussen did exceedingly well during the group stages by scoring 523 runs with an average of 58.11. Both the players have extensive experience playing on the Highveld, and they know the Wanderers pretty well. That, according to Rashid Khan, is what gives them the upper hand.

While SEC’s opening combination has fared poorly in the competition, Tony de Zorzi and David Bedingham have been in the top two for less. With an average of only 12.40, the opening partnership of the SEC has been the worst.

However, the two have picked up significantly in the last few games. De Zorzi, in particular, delivered an impressive 49-ball 78 in Qualifier 2 against Paarl Royals, and Markram is confident that De Zorzi’s mental strength and growing form will be crucial for SEC in the final.

Markram has also played a key role in mentoring de Zorzi, telling his young teammate that the knockouts are where the real season begins. If de Zorzi and Bedingham can come to the party, SEC’s top order might surprise their opponents.

Bowlers’ Duel: The Seamer Showdown

The Wanderers pitch, which is known for its pace and bounce, will favor the seam bowlers in the final. The seamers, however, seemed to be a class apart when it came to the group stages, taking away 41 wickets. Out of them all, Marco Jansen has become a standout pick, with added bounce and success in taking down wickets before the power play.

However, SEC will definitely be sweating upon the fitness level of Ottneil Baartman, as he left during Qualifier 2 with a reported injury. If Baartman is not available, young Andile Simelane can be brought in, but that would cost SEC some experience.

The other team, MICT, had a very powerful pace attack headed by Kagiso Rabada and Trent Boult. But it was Corbin Bosch who led the way as the leading seamer of their team, claiming 10 wickets in the tournament. It has given Bosch extra motivation since Anrich Nortje, who would have been part of South Africa’s Champions Trophy squad, is missing from their squad. A performance in the final could make him a strong contender for that slot.

The Coaches: Behind-the-Scenes Influence

While the players take center stage, the influence of the coaches cannot be understated. SEC’s coach, Adi Birrell, has been instrumental in guiding the team to two titles, with the players praising his calm demeanor and strong values. Markram described Birrell as a “grandfather figure” in the dressing room, noting that his ability to manage each player individually has been a key factor in the team’s success.

Another individual who has made a difference is MICT coach Robin Peterson, who has contributed significantly to the turnaround of his team. Since the last two seasons were tough, Peterson helped MICT turn into a much more positive and focused unit.

Rashid Khan, who shared a close bond with Peterson at MI New York, said, “He’s been an absolute support for all of us.”. With his leadership, MICT has turned into one of the most clinical sides in the competition.

A Thrilling Finish Awaits

The SA20 season is ending, and the final promises to be a thriller between two closely matched teams. SEC’s quest for three successive titles is set to be put to the test by a resurgent MICT, led by the tactical genius of Rashid Khan. This thriller will form a perfect platform, as matchups involving openers, seamers, and coaches will surely be added entertainment.

Fans must wait for that highly-charged final which goes all the way down to the last ball; can the SEC reassert their kingship, or is this first-time MICT to claim her maiden title? Time alone would say.
