Rohit Sharma’s Desired Dhoni-Style Test Exit Denied by BCCI: Reports

Rohit Sharma Planned Mid-Series Test Retirement Like MS Dhoni. BCCI denied the desire due to inconsistency issues

According to a report by Sky Sports, India’s Test captain Rohit Sharma had expressed his wish to retire from Test cricket during the upcoming five-match series against England, mirroring MS Dhoni’s mid-series retirement during the 2014 Australia tour. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) reportedly turned down the request.

BCCI Rejects Rohit Sharma’s Proposal, Cites Need for Leadership Consistency

The BCCI selectors, according to the report, made a point of keeping leadership continuity intact during the England series. They invited Rohit Sharma to the team but in a non-captaincy role. Refusing to carry on under those terms, Sharma decided to retire from Test cricket before the series, a move that surprised everyone, including fans and members of the cricket fraternity.

Virat Kohli Takes a Cue with His Test Retirement

In a dramatic turn of events after Rohit Sharma’s departure, former captain Virat Kohli also revealed that he had retired from Test cricket. The simultaneous retirement of two of India’s most seasoned Test cricketers has left a leadership void, which the BCCI selectors are finding it tough to fill with a new generation of leaders.

Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant in Line for India’s Test Captaincy

The BCCI selection panel is said to have had informal meetings with Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant for the available Test captaincy. Though Gill, the Gujarat Titans skipper in the IPL, is thought to be the preferred candidate, the committee has not made a decision as yet. The announcement of the official team for the English series should be made by May 23.

Selector Concerns About Gill’s Place in the Team

Even with Gill’s strong leadership credentials in the IPL, at least one selector questioned awarding him the full captaincy because of doubts over whether he will be consistently selected for the Test XI. Hence, a role of vice-captaincy is also being viewed for him. Rishabh Pant, who is currently leading LSG, is also being considered as another possible candidate to lead.

Sunil Gavaskar: IPL a Perfect Training Ground for Future Captains

Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar feels the Indian Premier League (IPL) is a good platform for developing future Indian national team captains. He cited Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, and Shreyas Iyer as the three most likely leadership talents after the retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

Gavaskar on Gill, Pant, and Iyer’s Leadership Potential

Gavaskar said that although these youngsters have shown huge promise, it will take a couple of years for them to come up to the standard of great leaders such as MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli. He endorsed Gill’s attacking nature, Pant’s participation from the back of the stumps, and Iyer’s sense of tactics as being vital traits for the next Indian captains.

It will take a couple of years to achieve the elite status of our previous super captains. But the signs are good,” Gavaskar stated in an event for the Star Sports Press Room.

The Road Ahead for Indian Test Cricket After Rohit Sharma’s Retirement

With Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s retirements redrawing the Indian Test landscape, the BCCI has crucial decisions to make in the future. The leadership change, expected to be resolved by May 23, will determine the tone of India’s performance during the high-profile England Test series.
