According to recent reports from PTI, India’s cricket captain, Rohit Sharma, is set to tour England for a five-match Test series, which will begin on June 20 at Headingley in Leeds.
After the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 ended, there has been a lot of focus on Rohit Sharma’s future as both a player and a captain in Test cricket. He struggled badly in Australia, both with his batting and leadership, which led to India missing out on a place in the final of the ICC World Test Championship.
There were earlier reports suggesting that Rohit Sharma might have played his last Test match and wouldn’t be going to England. However, recent PTI reports say that if he’s fit, he will lead the team in the upcoming series.
The Indian squad for the Test series against England will be announced in the second week of May. There will be at least six players competing for a couple of middle-order spots. The squad is likely to have 15 or 16 members.
Several domestic players are expected to be included, with Karun Nair, the top batter in the last domestic season, likely to join the A tour and possibly the Test squad. Other players like Sai Sudharsan, Shreyas Iyer, Sarfaraz Khan, Rajat Patidar, and Devdutt Padikkal, who have been excelling in domestic cricket, are also in the mix for the middle-order positions.
Reports suggest that Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli will be automatic selections for the Test team. Nitish Kumar Reddy, who impressed in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, is expected to be the all-rounder.
The Test series between India and England will also kick off the new cycle of the ICC World Test Championship. The first match will be held from June 20 to 24 at Headingley in Leeds, followed by the second match on July 2 at Edgbaston in Birmingham.
The third match will take place at Lord’s in London on July 10, and the final two games are scheduled for July 23 and 31 at Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester and The Kia Oval, respectively.
