Rohit Sharma, the star opener for India, has announced his retirement from Test cricket while outlining his future goals. After leading India to a T20 World Cup victory in 2024, Rohit Sharma decided to retire from T20Is and shift his focus to the 50-over format, with the ODI World Cup in 2027 being his primary target.
Rohit Sharma Announces Retirement from Test Cricket
The 38-year-old took to his official Instagram handle and announced the big news via his Instagram story on May 7, during the ongoing IPL season. He confirmed that he will continue to represent India in One Day Internationals (ODIs) and will now focus solely on the 50-over format for the national team.
In a candid conversation with journalist Vimal Kumar, Rohit Sharma spoke about India’s heartbreaking loss in the 2023 ODI World Cup final. Despite an impressive unbeaten run throughout the tournament, India fell short in the final against Australia, leaving Rohit and the team disappointed.
Looking ahead, with his retirements from T20Is and Test cricket, Rohit shared that his focus has shifted to the 2027 ODI World Cup, which will be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Rohit admitted that the desire to lift the ODI trophy remains strong in his heart.
“Zehem mein bilkul hai (on playing ODI World Cup 2027). Bilkul [It’s definitely on my mind. Absolutely],” Rohit Sharma said.
“Acha rahega agar aisa hua to (on adding the ODI World Cup to his cabinet) [It would be great if that happens],” he added.
Reflecting on the 2023 ODI World Cup Final Loss
Rohit Sharma has won four ICC trophies: two T20 World Cups (2007 and 2024) and two Champions Trophies (2013 and 2025), with two of those victories coming under his captaincy. However, the dream of winning the ICC World Test Championship remains unfulfilled, despite reaching the final in 2023.
Although Rohit wasn’t part of India’s 2011 ODI World Cup-winning team, he played in the 2015, 2019, and 2023 campaigns. He led India to the final in 2023 but lost to Australia.
Rohit is one of the most dominant ODI players, with 11,168 runs in 273 matches at an average of 48.77. He has scored 32 centuries, including three double-hundreds, and holds the record for the highest individual score in ODIs, with 264.
