Some of the most exciting and high-scoring cricket matches in history have taken place on the Indian Premier League (IPL) stage. As T20 cricket has grown in popularity, teams have been more focused on scoring lots of runs to win. Recently, the Lucknow team became the second team after Bangalore to join an exclusive club of teams to score 250 runs or more in a single inning. The top five team totals in IPL history will be discussed in this article along with images that highlight the power hitting and technique that went into these historic innings.
Royal Challengers Bangalore – 263/5 (vs Pune Warriors India, 2013)
In the 2013 IPL season, Chris Gayle set out to break records, and he succeeded in doing so by scoring the fastest T20 century ever. He scored an unbeaten 175 runs off only 66 balls after smashing his first 50 runs off 17 balls and the next 50 off just 13 balls. In addition to helping RCB win, AB de Villiers also contributed to the team’s record-breaking IPL total and 130-run victory over Pune Warriors India.
Lucknow Super Giants – 257/5 (vs Punjab Kings, 2023)
In a Friday night match against the Punjab Kings at the IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali, the Lucknow Super Giants created history by recording the second-highest team total in IPL history with a staggering 257/5. On a pitch that was heavily in their favor, the batsmen, led by Kyle Mayers’ quick fifty and the explosive batting of Ayush Badoni and Marcus Stoinis, completely outclassed PBKS. Prior to his dismissal, Stoinis made a 40-ball 72, while Nicholas Pooran added a 19-ball 45. Kagiso Rabada and Arshdeep Singh both suffered penalties, giving for more than 50 runs in their four overs.
Royal Challengers Bangalore – 248/3 (vs Gujarat Lions, 2016)
The M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore hosted one of the most memorable high-scoring games in IPL history in 2016. Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers’ brilliant partnership dazzled the audience despite a rocky beginning that saw Chris Gayle removed early. In the beginning, Kohli took his time, needing 40 balls to score his first 50 runs. However, after that, he erupted for the next 59 runs in just 15 balls, finishing with 109 off of 55. Their 229-run partnership, which De Villiers scored alone on 129 off 52, is the second highest in T20 history. Gujarat Lions were only able to score 104 runs before being removed by RCB, who easily won the match.
Chennai Super Kings – 246/5 (vs Rajasthan Royals, 2010)

In a midday game in Chennai during the 2010 season, Murali Vijay produced one of the greatest innings in IPL history. Despite their inconsistent play, Vijay and Albie Morkel helped Chennai Super Kings post an impressive total of 246/5. Incredibly, Vijay struck 127 off just 56 balls, and Morkel added 62 off 34. Rajasthan Royals struggled and could only muster 223/5 in return.
Kolkata Knight Riders – 245/6 (vs Kings XI Punjab, 2018)
The Kolkata Knight Riders boasted a strong batting lineup in the 2018 IPL that could instill terror in the hearts of their rivals. They needed to win in Indore that afternoon in order to continue playing. As the KKR team’s temporary pinch-hitter opener, Sunil Narine provided them a strong start by scoring 75 runs off just 36 balls. However, it was the pivotal partnership between Dinesh Karthik and Andre Russell that made the Punjab team unable to compete with KKR’s score. At the time, Russell, a large West Indian, scored 31 runs off just 14 balls, while Karthik, the captain of KKR, produced an incredible knock of 50 off just 23 balls. In addition, some crucial cameos helped KKR advance to the final score of 245 for 6.
