Recap 2023: analyzing the performance of West Indies in Test cricket

West Indies hasn’t performed really well in test cricket this year but the next could be a banger for this team so before going to 2024 let’s recap 2023.

We’ve seen the mighty West Indies dominating world cricket in the past but this generation of Caribbean cricket cannot level that team. Historically, West Indies failed to qualify for the ODI World Cup 2023 for the first time, which was the biggest blow for the two-time world champions. Despite being the only team to have two T20I World Cups West Indies couldn’t qualify for the 2022 World Cup Also. watching a World Champion team perform poorly in almost every format is sad. In test cricket, West Indies has won only one game out of six this year which was against Zimbabwe. According to the ICC ranking, the Caribbean country is in the 8th position in the list and only above Zimbabwe and Bangladesh.  This year West Indies toured Zimbabwe and South Africa in February and March and hosted India in July. for each series, they’ve played 2 games. Let’s analyze each one of them individually.

After losing against Australia by 2-0 West Indies visited Zimbabwe for two matches series and started the year by winning it. In that series, the match resulted draw after Zimbabwe’s fightback. In the final and decider game West Indies played so well and won the game by an inning and 4 runs. West Indian Left-handed batter Tagenarine Chanderpaul(258) was the highest scorer in that series and a west indian slow left-arm bowler Gudakesh Motie(19) was the leading wicket taker in that series. West Indies has grabbed the series by 1-0.

Just after coming back from Zimbabwe Caribbean flew to South Africa to play another two matches test series. The first centurion test was won by South Africa by 87 runs with the Help of Aiden Markram’s century. To level the series West Indies have to clinch the final game at Johanesburg. In that game, South African captain Temba Bvuma played a massive inning of 172 runs which led his team to register a big win of 284 runs. Proteas clean swept West Indians by 2-0. Aiden Mrakram(276) was the player of the match for scoring the most runs in the series. Kagiso Rabada with 12 wickets in two games was the leading wicket-taker in the series.

In July, the Indian team they have visited the Caribbean land for two test matches. West Indians lost the first Rosseau test by a big margin of an inning and 141 runs. Indian left-handed batter who was making his debut scored an incredible 171 runs and became the player of the match. West Indians made a comeback in the Port of Spain test where they managed to draw the test and escaped the clean sweep. Yashasvi Jaiswal with 266 runs and Ravichandran Ashwin with 15 wickets were leading the stats board after India won the series by 1-0.
