Ravi Shastri lauds Virat Kohli’s Test captaincy, describing him as an “uncut diamond” and commending his passion for Test cricket.

Former India head coach, Ravi Shastri, spoke highly of Virat Kohli’s leadership, describing him as an “uncut diamond” for Test captaincy. Shastri, who aimed to make Test cricket paramount during his tenure, identified Kohli’s passion and readiness to play tough cricket as key attributes.

Under Kohli’s captaincy, India achieved significant milestones, including their first Test series win in Australia (2018/19) and reaching the final of the World Test Championship in 2021. Kohli led the team in 68 Test matches, winning 40 of them, making him India’s most successful Test captain.

Shastri acknowledged Kohli’s commitment to Test cricket, emphasizing his preparedness to do the hard yards and play tough cricket. The former coach recalled encouraging a “no complaints, no excuses” attitude, and how Kohli embraced the challenge.

In addition, Ravi Shastri reminisced about Jasprit Bumrah’s journey in Test cricket, highlighting the fast bowler’s eagerness to succeed. Bumrah, labeled initially as a white-ball specialist, became the fastest Indian bowler to reach 150 wickets in Test cricket and currently holds the top spot in the ICC Test Rankings.
