The sixth round of the Ranji Trophy saw many Indian stars in action, and it has so far been an arduous day for a few of India’s top-order batsmen. The key players who have been vital for India’s Test combinations, Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Shubman Gill, have so far contributed no more than 11 runs to the entire innings combined. As the tournament garnered a lot of attention, largely because these big names were back into domestic cricket again, this was an unexpected and rather unusual development in the competition.
Rohit Sharma Continues to Struggle for Form

Indian Test captain Rohit Sharma, who returned to the Ranji Trophy after a decade, is still struggling for form. Although there was much excitement over his return to domestic cricket, Rohit failed miserably in this match. He faced 19 balls and scored only three runs before getting dismissed.
His struggle was evident when a bouncer from Jammu and Kashmir’s Umar Nazir Mir found its way to the cover fielder after hitting the top edge of his bat. Rohit’s inability to get amongst the runs in this match is something that he also experienced during India’s tour of Australia a few weeks ago; his team had to leave him out of the third Test, for that matter, as he managed to score only 31 runs in three Tests.
So, his performance in this ongoing Ranji match will raise several questions about his current form, especially ahead of India’s international commitments.
Yashasvi Jaiswal’s Early Exit

Yashasvi Jaiswal, the young opener for India, was no different. The Mumbai batsman was dismissed for a mere four runs after facing just eight balls. His downfall came in the third over of the innings when Jammu and Kashmir’s fast bowler Aaqib Nabi Dar delivered a deceptive delivery. The first ball of the over was wide and Yashasvi stretched for it.
However, the second ball of the overcame sharply, catching his pads in front of the stumps. The umpire raised his finger, and Yashasvi was sent back to the pavilion after a short stay at the crease. His dismissal indicated that he faced difficulty against the unknown bowlers who could make use of the smallest weakness in his technique.
Shubman Gill Fails to Capitalize on Captaincy Role

Shubman Gill, who is captaining the Punjab team in the Ranji Trophy, also struggled with the bat in the ongoing match against Karnataka. The right-handed batter, known for his aggressive stroke play at number three for India, was dismissed for just four runs from eight balls.
Despite scoring a boundary early in his innings, Gill’s stay at the crease was short-lived as Karnataka’s Abhilash Shetty sent him back to the dressing room. Like his fellow top-order batsmen, Gill’s failure raises questions about his consistency at the domestic level and his readiness for international challenges.
Unknown Bowlers Pose a Challenge
One of the major reasons behind these top-order batsmen getting dismissed early has been the impact of relatively unknown bowlers. Players like Aaqib Nabi Dar and Abhilash Shetty, who are not as widely recognized in domestic cricket, have managed to unsettle established names like Jaiswal, Rohit, and Gill. Their ability to take advantage of conditions and outwit a few of the best batsmen India has to offer has also added a dose of unpredictability to this edition of the Ranji Trophy.
The first day of the sixth round of the Ranji Trophy has not gone well for a few of the biggest cricketing stars India. Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Shubman Gill are the three Indians who have been instrumental in the Indian Test team, but the trio failed to contribute with the bat, scoring just 11 runs.
The Ranji Trophy, which is the platform for getting back into form and forcing oneself back into the national side, was an early blow for them, and their dismissal will surely give cause for concern. Whether these players can bounce back and prove their worth in the coming matches remains to be seen as the tournament progresses.
