After testing positive for Covid-19, India head coach Rahul Dravid is unlikely to travel to the UAE with the rest of the squad for the Asia Cup 2022. “India head coach Rahul Dravid tests positive for COVID-19 and will not travel to Dubai for the Asia Cup,” BCCI sources said on Tuesday.
The cricketers who are currently in India are expected to depart for Dubai on Tuesday without Dravid. Former India captain Vikram Rahtour (batting coach) and other support staff members Paras Mhambrey (bowling coach) were given a break from the Zimbabwe ODIs as former teammate VVS Laxman stepped in as interim coach for the three-match ODI series, which India won 3-0. The Asia Cup is scheduled to begin on August 27, but India will kick off their campaign against Pakistan the following day in Dubai.
However, there is no word on whether Laxman will replace Dravid again.
The defending champions are in Group B with Pakistan and a qualifier, while Group A includes Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan.
With the exception of Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel, who are both injured, India has decided to field a full-strength squad, which many believe is very similar to what their squad for the T20 World Cup in Australia in a couple of months may look like.
All eyes will be on Virat Kohli, who is making a comeback following the England One-Day Internationals. The former captain, who has not been at his best recently, was given a break from the tours to the West Indies and Zimbabwe.
