Prithvi Shaw Brushes Aside Selector Thoughts, Smashes 244 in Record-Breaking Knock

Prithvi Shaw’s colossal 244-run innings for Northamptonshire in a One-Day Cup match shatters records, but the Indian opening batter remains unfazed by national selector opinions. Shaw’s spectacular performance includes 28 fours and 11 sixes, contributing to Northamptonshire’s resounding victory.

In an astonishing display of batting prowess, Prithvi Shaw, India’s opening batter, left spectators awestruck as he smashed an awe-inspiring 244 runs for Northamptonshire in a high-stakes One-Day Cup match against Somerset at the County Ground. Shaw’s extraordinary innings not only shattered multiple List A records but also propelled Northamptonshire to a commanding victory by 87 runs.

Shaw’s monumental feat, achieved in just 153 balls, was adorned with an impressive tally of 28 fours and 11 sixes. His remarkable performance propelled Northamptonshire to a formidable total of 415-8, firmly establishing his team’s dominance on the field.

Despite his remarkable achievement, Shaw remains firmly grounded and unfazed by the speculations surrounding his national team selection. “Not really thinking what the Indian selectors may be thinking, but I just want to have a good time here, have a good time with the players over here and the support staff. Northamptonshire have given me this opportunity… they’re really looking after me. I’m really enjoying it,” Shaw expressed humbly after the match.

Shaw’s batting spectacle also etched his name in the annals of cricket history. His sensational knock ranks as the sixth-highest individual score in any List A match. Furthermore, Shaw joins an exclusive club of batters who have achieved multiple List A double centuries, with illustrious names such as India’s skipper Rohit Sharma, Australia’s Travis Head, and Ali Brown.

This accomplishment adds to Shaw’s growing list of accolades. The cricketer, who last represented India in July 2021, now holds the record for the highest-ever List A score by an overseas player in List A cricket. Additionally, he becomes the first batter to achieve List A double centuries in two different countries while playing for two distinct teams.

Reflecting on his remarkable performance, Shaw shared insights into his mindset on the day. “The sun was out, it was kind of like Indian weather today so it was really looking good. You know when an inside edge doesn’t get me out, that means this day is for me. You have to be lucky sometimes, so I think this was a day for me. I didn’t look back after that,” Shaw said, recalling the fortunate moments that accompanied his stunning innings.

Shaw’s previous List A double century was achieved in February 2021 when he scored an unbeaten 227 runs for Mumbai against Puducherry. During his record-breaking innings, Shaw partnered effectively with Sam Whiteman (54), contributing to a significant partnership of 194 runs for Northamptonshire.

With his indomitable spirit and team-first approach, Shaw continues to make his mark in the cricketing world. “The 227 was in my head to be honest. I spoke to Whitey (Whiteman) when he was there and I told him it’s 227, my highest score. But it was a good team effort all around. I always try and win matches for the team and I’m the kind of player who puts my team first and then myself. If scoring like this can help my team to win, then I should continue this,” Shaw concluded, emphasizing his dedication to team success.
