The controversy surrounding the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Indian media revolves around the claims of a significant financial loss post-ICC Champions Trophy 2025. PCB hosted the 2025 edition of the Champions Trophy, and the Indian media reported that the Board incurred a loss of 85% while hosting the event. These claims were based on the drastic cuts in the player’s fees and accommodations after reports surfaced suggesting a 90% reduction in domestic player’s match fees.
However, PCB dismissed these claims earlier this week as the spokesperson Aamir Mir and CFO, Javed Murtaza, stated, ” All expenses for the tournament were covered by the ICC, PCB generated revenue through gate money and ticket sales, and after the audit, we expect an additional ₹3 billion from the ICC.”
He also claimed that the board initially targeted 2 billion in earnings from the Champions Trophy, but they surpassed this goal, reaching a total of 10 billion in profit, a 40% increase from the previous year. He said, “With this financial strength, PCB now ranks among the top three richest cricket boards in the world, The board has also paid Rs 40 million in taxes,”
PCB Announces Future Use Of Funds
Murtaza also mentioned the further use of the funds that they will be getting and said, “ The remaining funds will be used to further improve these and other stadiums, including those in Karachi, Faisalabad, and Rawalpindi,”
The ICC Champions Trophy was the first event hosted in Pakistan in 29 years, regarding which Mir expressed his pride, “After 29 years, a major stadium upgrade project was undertaken, which was a significant task,”
Talking about the Indian media’s claim about the cut in the domestic players’ salary, he mentioned that PCB had reversed that decision. He also cleared that they are still awaiting a full explanation from the ICC regarding the PCB’s absence from the leagues’s final stage which was held in Dubai.
