The chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Mohsin Naqvi, is thinking about naming former captain Waqar Younis as the new director of cricket affairs. This decision aims to leverage Younis’s extensive experience to manage cricket-related activities, decentralize management, and ensure that specialists handle cricket issues.
A PCB insider revealed that Naqvi wants to follow the example of other national cricket boards by giving a former player the responsibility of managing cricket affairs. “Waqar Younis is a top candidate to take on the full responsibility of overseeing men’s cricket, including working with the two foreign head coaches, national selectors, and domestic cricket departments,” the source told PTI.
Naqvi’s vision involves decentralizing cricket management so experts handle cricket-specific issues rather than just administrative officials. This approach includes having the Director of Cricket oversee international cricket schedules. “Naqvi doesn’t want to centralize all powers. He aims to decentralize things, especially concerning cricket issues. In the future, even international cricket schedules and issues would be overseen by the Director of Cricket,” the source added.
PCB Focus on Champions Trophy Preparation
Currently, Naqvi is focused on preparing for the Champions Trophy and other administrative decisions within the board. He believes that cricket matters should be managed by specialists, not just administrative personnel. “Being the federal interior minister, Naqvi believes it is only fair that all cricket matters are handled by specialists and not only people in the administration,” the source explained.

Waqar Younis, 52, who lives in Australia with his family, has previously served as Pakistan’s head coach and bowling coach. He is open to providing his services to the national team, making him a strong candidate for the Director of Cricket Affairs role. If appointed, Younis would have the authority to bring in other former players for assistance, ensuring a comprehensive and expert approach to managing cricket in Pakistan.
