In a historic turn of events at the IPL 2024 mini-auction, Australian World Cup-winning captain Pat Cummins emerged as the costliest player in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) secured Cummins for a staggering Rs 20.5 crore during the second round of the auction.
The auction witnessed a fierce battle between heavyweights Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for Cummins’ services. Starting with a modest base price of Rs 2.00 crore, Cummins quickly became the focal point of an intense bidding war.
CSK and Mumbai Indians initiated the bidding, pushing the stakes to Rs 4.8 crore, with CSK leading. Royal Challengers Bangalore joined the fray with a bid of Rs 5.00 crore, adding to the competitive landscape. Sunrisers Hyderabad entered the scene with an Rs 8.00 crore bid, marking the moment when Cummins became the day’s first millionaire.

The battle between SRH and RCB intensified, propelling the bids to Rs 12.00 crore. As the figures soared past 15 crores, Sunrisers raised their offer to Rs 17.00 crore. Surpassing the Rs 18.5 crore mark, Cummins secured the title of the IPL’s highest-paid player, eclipsing the previous record set by Sam Curran in the 2023 auction.
The competition remained fierce, with RCB pushing the bid to Rs 19.25 crore. Ultimately, Sunrisers Hyderabad outpaced their rivals, reaching Rs 20.00 crore. The bidding war reached unprecedented heights at Rs 20.50 crore, officially making Pat Cummins the first player to breach the 20-crore barrier in an IPL auction.
