Pakistan Threatens to Withdraw from World Cup 2023

Pakistan Sports Minister Ehsan Mazari has threatened that Pakistan will withdraw from Cricket World Cup 2023 scheduled in India later this year.

Ehsan Mazari, Pakistan’s Sports Minister, has threatened to withdraw from the upcoming ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 in India. India has declined to play in Pakistan in the Asia Cup. The Asia Cup will now be a hybrid competition. Sri Lanka will host nine of the games, while Pakistan will host four of them. Pakistan, which is attempting to bring international cricket back to its nation, has taken a significant step backwards with the hybrid model that the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has endorsed.

Pakistan out of World Cup 2023

Pakistan’s threat to skip the World Cup in 2023 is not something that happened out of the blue. In recent times, they have expressed numerous worries about security. Even the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had stated that they would prefer not to play at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium unless it was a knockout match. On October 15, the match between India and Pakistan will be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

Pakistan’s request to move their games

Pakistan’s plea to shift their game from the Narendra Modi Stadium was denied by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The largest stadium in terms of seating capacity is Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, which is anticipated to generate significant money for ICC. The country’s cricket landscape will suffer as a result of Pakistan’s World Cup exit. If India insists on playing its Asia Cup games at a neutral site, Pakistan will want the same thing for its World Cup matches in India, according to the Pakistani Minister of Sports.

Ehsan Mazari made this statement in response to news reports that Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has established a committee to investigate Pakistan’s participation in the World Cup in India. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the foreign minister of Pakistan, is the committee’s chairman. They would reportedly visit India to assess the level of security the Babar Azam-led team will enjoy.

How does Pakistan’s withdrawal affect them?

The hosting rights for the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025 have been awarded to Pakistan. They risk losing the opportunity to host the Champions Trophy if they threaten to boycott the World Cup in 2023.
