As the second Test between Pakistan and Bangladesh is in full swing in Rawalpindi, the prospect of Bangladesh whitewashing the series looms large.

Bangladesh has already won the first Test, and they are in a strong position to whitewash Pakistan in this series. If they can do this, it will be a rare achievement, given the history of Test cricket in Pakistan.

Pakistan has been a formidable force in Test cricket at home, and they have faced a whitewash only once- during England’s 2022 tour.

England registered a historic 3-0 series sweep against Pakistan. This was the first time Pakistan lost a three-Test series 3-0 on home soil.

Bangladesh is now on the verge of a remarkable feat. After a dominant show in the first Test, they have continued their fierce momentum in the second Test.

Hasan Mahmud and Nahid Rana’s commendable bowling helped in dismissing Pakistan for 172 runs in their second inning. Bangladesh had a target of 185 runs to win the match and claim a 2-0 series victory.

With their current performance and the chance to whitewash the series, Bangladesh is on the brink of achieving a remarkable feat.

Litton Das’ counterattacking 138, helped by Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s 78, to take them to a respectable 262, a superb batting display given their position early on in the innings.

Taking inspiration from the batters, the Bangladesh bowlers reduced Pakistan to 9-2 in their second innings before stumps.

Hasan Mahmud claimed 5-43, becoming the first Bangladesh bowler to record a five-wicket haul against Pakistan. Mahmud was aided by Nahid Rana with a figure of 4-44 and Taskin Ahmed (1-40).

The win in the first Test in Rawalpindi, their first against Pakistan, is one of their best ever, in the Bangladesh cricketing history. With a day and a half of cricket still to be played, Bangladesh would fancy their odds to chase 185. That the opening day was washed out and Bangladesh are still looking favourites to force a result, having come back from a slump, makes it even more remarkable.
