India’s cricketing fortunes improved dramatically under MS Dhoni’s guidance. Captain Cool led the Indian cricket team to three ICC trophies in six years. They won the T20 World Cup in 2007 and the ODI World Cup in 2011. Within two years, MS Dhoni’s India had won the third ICC title, the Champions Trophy.
It was the summer of 2013 in England when Team India embarked on their Champions League quest, which had previously been shared with Sri Lanka in 2002 when rain washed out the Final under then skipper Sourav Ganguly.
India had a fresh look roster for the Champions Trophy, with players like Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, and others missing out. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umesh Yadav, Vinay Kumar, and Ravindra Jadeja were among those named to the squad.
India won the tournament by winning all five matches, including the semi-final against Sri Lanka and the final against England. It was a bizarre affair at Edgbaston as a rain-soaked Final witnessed a 20-over contest.
India won the match by 5 runs, with to some great bowling by Jadeja, Ashwin, and Ishant Sharma, and etched their names in the history books. And this occurred on June 23, which marks the end of a decade today.
India has not won an ICC trophy since. It has been a decade since India has won an ICC title. On a day like today, fans took to social media to pay tribute to MS Dhoni and the Indian team that last brought the country an ICC trophy.
