Olympics LA 2028: The city of Pomona in southern California will host the cricket competition during the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Tuesday in Dubai.
The cricket matches will be held at the Fairgrounds in Pomona, and the sport is making a return to the Olympics after 128 years. There will be six teams each in the men’s and women’s tournaments.
ICC Chairman Jay Shah said in a statement: “We welcome the announcement of the venue for cricket at Los Angeles 2028 as it is a significant step towards the preparation for our sport’s return to the Olympics.”
“Although cricket is a hugely popular sport, it will be a fantastic opportunity to expand traditional boundaries when it features in the Olympics in the fast-paced, exciting T20 format that should appeal to new audiences.
“On behalf of the ICC, I want to express my gratitude to LA28 and the International Olympic Committee for their support and look forward to collaborating with them and ICC Members in preparing for LA28 and making cricket a huge success there,” said Shah in a statement.
Cricket last appeared in the Olympics at the 1900 Paris Games. It was added to the Olympics LA 2028 programme after a vote during the IOC’s 141st Session in Mumbai in October 2023.
Cricket joined five new sports for the Olympics LA 2028, including baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse (sixes), and squash.
The T20 format, which the ICC sees as the key to growing the game, has already been part of several other multi-sport events. Men’s and women’s T20 competitions were held at the Asian Games in 2010, 2014, and 2023. A women’s T20 tournament was also included in the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
