As Group B teams played their final games yesterday, the group stage of the ODI World Cup 2023 Qualifiers came to a close. With four victories in four games, the hosts, Zimbabwe, won Group A, and Sri Lanka won Group B with four victories in four games as well. Here is a preview of the Super Six.

Two significant upsets occurred during the World Cup 2023 Qualifiers’ group stages. West Indies participated in both surprises by falling to the Netherlands and the hosts, Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe overcame the West Indies by 35 runs, but their victory over the Netherlands was the bigger surprise.

Batting in the first innings, West Indies had amassed 374 runs. The halfway point made the goal appear insurmountable. In order to reach the aim, the Netherlands would have had to surpass the second-highest total in ODI history. To win the game, the Netherlands needed to score 30 runs in the final two overs. They scored 21 runs in the penultimate over Roston Chase bowled, which required Alzarri Joseph to deliver the final over while holding the opposition to nine runs. Five runs had to be scored in five balls after the first ball went for a four. On the last ball, when only one run was needed to win, West Indies managed to dismiss Logan van Beek to send the game into Super Over.

In the Super Over, the Netherlands brought in van Beek to bat. Against Jason Holder, he scored 30 runs in the super over. West Indies’ response saw them only manage to score eight runs while losing two wickets. Beek completed his all-around effort by bowling in the Super Over as well.

West Indies finished the group with just two wins and in third place due to the losses to the Netherlands and Zimbabwe.
