Following a resounding 309-run loss to the five-time champions Australia in the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup, Netherlands head coach Ryan Cook has candidly recognized that the team’s aspiration to reach the semifinals is currently a distant goal.
In a match where Australia posted a formidable total of 399-8, with Glenn Maxwell recording the fastest century in the tournament’s history and David Warner securing his sixth World Cup century, Netherlands struggled and were bowled out for a mere 90 runs in 21 overs.
Cook, during the post-match press conference, shared the team’s determination to face any opponent but admitted that the semifinals now appear quite out of reach. He said, “We initially aimed to push for the semi-finals, and although it seems distant at this moment, we have four matches left. We’ll prepare diligently and give our best to secure victories against any team we face.”

Cook acknowledged that the team’s execution of their plans against Australia fell short and stressed the importance of consistent play to challenge stronger teams in the global tournament. He stated, “The players are disappointed. We talked a good game beforehand, but our performance today did not meet our expectations. To compete with teams like Australia, we must execute our plans more effectively and demonstrate the resilience we pride ourselves on.”
He went on to describe how the team had moments of brilliance in the field, making impressive stops and putting in remarkable efforts. However, he highlighted a crucial dropped catch of Glenn Maxwell, a chance that could have altered the course of the match. Cook explained, “The players gave their all with outstanding efforts, showcasing remarkable saves and fielding actions. We had opportunities, some of them half-chances, which we needed to capitalize on for a better chance at victory.”
Cook concluded by emphasizing the need to reflect on their performance, learn from the experience, and focus on the upcoming game, acknowledging that the team is determined to recover despite the disappointment in the changing room.
