Munaf Patel, former Indian international and World Cup-winning cricketer has been appointed as the new bowling coach of Delhi Capitals for the upcoming seasons. The franchise made this announcement on Tuesday, with Hemang Badani taking over as the head coach while Venugopal Rao has been named the Director of Cricket.
Munaf Patel’s major assignment after his retirement
This is Munaf Patel’s first major coaching assignment after his retirement in 2018 from competitive cricket. Even though he was away from the game at the professional level, Munaf never really drifted out of cricketing circles and very often participated in various veterans’ tournaments. A master of lethal reverse swing and pinpoint yorkers during his playing days, Munaf’s expertise will be vital for the team to shape up the bowling attack of DC in the coming days.
Munaf Patel was an international player from 2006-2011, appearing in 86 games for India. In the IPL, he played with Rajasthan Royals (2008-10), Mumbai Indians (2011-13), and Gujarat Lions (2017). In fact, Patel is an IPL title holder with the Mumbai Indians in 2013.
He replaces former Australian all-rounder James Hopes, who parted ways with the franchise after Ricky Ponting left the reins as head coach in July 2024. Since then, Delhi Capitals has been concentrating on building a coaching staff mainly comprising Indian coaches.
While the team prepares for the IPL 2025 mega auction, DC has retained some players- Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Tristan Stubbs, and Abhishek Porel. They would be looking to gear up ahead of the auction with Rs 73 crore as a purse.
