New South Wales (NSW) captain Moises Henriques has finally confirmed his retirement from first-class cricket, bringing his career in the format to an end with the 2024-25 season. Now 38 years of age, Henriques decided to prioritize shorter formats of the sport while remaining an active member of his state team.
Highlights of Career

Henriques had a fine first-class career, scoring 6,830 runs at a career average of 34.84, with 13 centuries. He also took 127 wickets at an average of 30.75.
His talent was noted early in his career when he made a promising Test debut against India in 2013, scoring 68 and 81 not out. Subsequently, he found it difficult in games, not to cross double figures in the next three Tests.
Leadership Transition

Having not played in the Sheffield Shield since early November, Henriques recognized the need for leadership transition within the team. Jack Edwards, appointed as the one-day captain, successfully guided NSW during the remainder of the season, which ended with the team finishing fourth.
Henriques spoke of his opinions regarding the value of leadership through performance, saying, “My body was still able. but I just wasn’t leading by winning games of cricket for my state in the longer format.”
Gratitude and Future Plans
Looking back at his experience, Henriques thanked Cricket NSW for supporting him since the age of 17. He reiterated his dedication to the shorter formats and was looking forward to the younger players taking the reins to propel NSW in the future.
“I leave the team in good hands with Jack Edwards, who has displayed such good leadership so early in his career,” he said.
Tribute from Coaches
NSW coach Greg Shipperd commended Henriques for his double effect on and off the field, citing his professionalism and leadership traits. Shipperd admitted that Henriques still has a lot to contribute, particularly in the One-Day Cup and the Big Bash League (BBL).
Moises Henriques’ retirement signals the end of an era in New South Wales first-class cricket. His playing and leadership legacy will be remembered, and his contributions in the limited-overs format in the future are eagerly anticipated.
