Mohammad Hafeez confident in Pakistan’s readiness for Australian challenge

Pakistan’s team director, Mohammad Hafeez, discusses the team’s readiness, concerns, and priorities ahead of their Test series in Australia, offering insights into their strategy and challenges.

Pakistan’s Team Director, Mohammad Hafeez, is optimistic about the upcoming three-match Test series against Australia, expressing confidence in the readiness of Shan Masood-led side. Hafeez emphasized that performing well in Australia remains a primary goal for the team.

Historically, Pakistan has never won a Test series in Australia, with their last tour in the 2019/20 season resulting in a 2-0 series victory for the hosts. Despite this, Hafeez believes the current Test team, known for its stability and past achievements, is enthusiastic about facing challenges in Australia.

Addressing reporters after Pakistan’s initial practice session before the Test series opener on December 14, Hafeez stated, “This Pakistan Test team is well settled and they have done well for the country in the past. It is heartening to see that these guys are excited to take on challenges and doing well in Australia will be a top priority.”

However, Pakistan will miss the services of leg-spinner Abrar Ahmed, sidelined due to a right leg injury. He is set for rehabilitation to ensure fitness for the second Test in Melbourne from December 26-30. Despite this setback, Hafeez assured that the rest of the team is fit and eager to face Australia.

Reflecting on the warm-up game against the Prime Minister’s XI at the Manuka Oval in Canberra, which ended in a draw, Hafeez expressed dissatisfaction with the pitch and conditions. He believed the slow wicket might have been a strategic move by Australia. Despite the disappointment, Hafeez reiterated the team’s preparedness for the upcoming challenges.

Additionally, Hafeez commented on Nathan Lyon’s return to the Australian Test team after a calf injury, acknowledging Lyon’s prowess but expressing confidence in Pakistan’s ability to tackle him. He emphasized that the team has performed well against off-spinners in recent series and hopes the batters will continue to do so in this series.

The Pakistan team remains optimistic despite challenges, aiming to make a mark in the Test series against Australia and break the historical barrier of winning a Test series on Australian soil.
