As MI New York defeated Seattle Orcas to win the Major League Cricket (MLC) 2023 championship in the league’s maiden season, Nicholas Pooran took the initiative and led from the front. When it mattered most, Pooran was in fantastic form and broke the season’s top score.
Seattle Orcas’ batting
Quinton de Kock, a former MI player in the IPL, hit 87 runs in 52 balls. He hit nine fours and four sixes throughout his knock. At position five, Shubham Ranjane scored 29 runs in 16 balls. During his brief cameo, Dwaine Pretorius scored 21 runs in only seven balls. Pretorius’s performance towards the end enabled Seattle Orcas to set a goal of 184 for MI New York.
Rashid Khan was the bowler of choice for MI New York, taking three wickets. In his four overs, Rashid captured three wickets while only allowing nine runs to be scored. Trent Boult also claimed three wickets in addition to Rashid. David Wiese of Namibia, an all-around player, played poorly with the ball in hand. 65 runs were let up in Wiese’s four overs.
MI New York’s chase
Steven Taylor, the MI franchise’s opener, was dismissed on the third ball of the chase. His wicket was lost, which allowed MINY’s captain, Pooran, to enter the game. The West Indian wicketkeeper single-handedly carried MI New York to victory despite little help from the opposition. Pooran secured his team’s victory in just 16 overs by scoring 137 runs in just 55 balls while remaining unbeaten. His innings had a strike rate of 249 and had 10 fours and 13 sixes.
It was a rather unremarkable performance from the bowling team for Seattle Orcas. Imad Wasim of Pakistan and Wayne Parnell of South Africa both claimed a wicket. Imad and Parnell, the sole wicket-takers from the Orcas’ bowling lineup, only combined to bowl two overs. The tournament’s most impressive bowler, American Cameron Gannon, let up 36 runs in his four overs. Pretorius, who had dazzled everyone in the first inning with the bat, was unable to recreate his brilliance in the second inning as he let up 47 runs in just three overs.
