Gautam Gambhir, the mentor of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), sees the acquisition of Australia’s star pacer Mitchell Starc for a record INR 24.75 crore as a game-changer, not just for his bowling prowess but for imparting crucial insights to the domestic fast-bowlers.
In a historic move, Starc became the costliest player in IPL history during Tuesday’s auction, surpassing the record held by his Australian captain Pat Cummins. Gambhir believes Starc’s multifaceted skills, from bowling with the new ball to excelling in death overs, make him an invaluable addition to lead KKR’s attack.
“He is an X-factor, someone who can lead the attack, bowl at any stage of the game, and mentor our talented domestic bowlers. Starc brings not just bowling skills but also leadership qualities,” remarked Gambhir in an interview with JioCinema.

KKR, known for its strategic picks, also secured Afghanistan spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman, English pacer Gus Atkinson, and Indian left-arm fast-bowler Chetan Sakariya at the auction. Gambhir expressed satisfaction with the team’s strengthened bowling lineup.
“With options like Mujeeb, Gus, Sunil Narine, Varun Chakravarthy, and now Mitchell Starc, along with Indian seamers and Chetan Sakariya, we have a well-rounded bowling arsenal. This provides flexibility to explore different combinations based on the venue,” he added.
Gambhir, back as the mentor for KKR, expressed deep emotional ties with the team, citing the overwhelming love received during his captaincy from 2011 to 2017. As KKR seeks to recreate the IPL triumphs of 2012 and 2014, Gambhir emphasized the team’s unwavering commitment and fighting spirit.
“For me, KKR is not just a team; it is an emotion. The love and support from the people of Kolkata for seven years are unparalleled. While there’s no guarantee of victory, one thing is certain—we will fight till the last drop of our blood,” concluded Gambhir
