Amidst the fervor surrounding the upcoming Boxing Day Test at the MCG, Australian cricket legend Michael Hussey, recently honored in the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame, shared valuable insights with selectors about choosing a worthy successor to David Warner, specifically emphasizing the need for a specialist opener with a robust Sheffield Shield record.
Drawing from his own experience as a Test opener, Hussey stressed the importance of recognizing players who have excelled in the traditional longer format of the game. While refraining from naming a specific candidate, he urged selectors to prioritize a specialist for the crucial first Test against the West Indies in January.
In an interview with ESPNcricinfo, Hussey expressed, “Opening is one of the toughest jobs in the game. So for me if I was selecting, I’d be going for a traditional, proper opener. Someone who has done it for a long period.”

“I hope that they reward the guy that’s been performing very well at Sheffield Shield cricket. I think that sends a great message to the competition. And it’s great for our pathways that we’re going to reward the guys that are doing well,” Hussey emphasized.
