Former Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been prolonging his IPL career for the last four seasons having last played international cricket in 2019 where he was runout in the semi-final of Cricket World Cup 2019 against New Zealand. The wicketkeeper batter has since then featured only for the Chenna Super Kings in the IPL and has been often questioned about his retirement but the only Indian captain to win three ICC trophies has blatantly denied any plans of retiring from the game.

The Situation

But things have been slightly different this season with MS playing with a lot of injuries and batting way down the order at number eight or sometimes even at number nine the speculation of IPL 2024 being Dhoni’s last season has picked up pace. Amidst all the speculation CSK batting coach Michael Hussey has expressed his desire to see Dhoni play in the IPL for at least the next couple of seasons.

Coach’s Corner

In the words of Hussey, “He is still batting so well. He does prepare well – he gets into the camp very early and hits a lot of balls. He has been in good touch all season really. I guess we just got to try to manage him from the body side of things. He had a knee surgery after the last season. So he has been managing that from the initial stage of the tournament.

The Desire

“From a personal point of view, I hope he keeps going for another couple of years. But we will just have to wait and see. He is the only one who will make that call. And he likes to sort of build the drama a little bit as well. So I wouldn’t expect a decision anytime soon,” Hussey added.

The Performance

If we talk about Dhoni’s performance in the ongoing IPL season the hard-hitting wicketkeeper batter has been batting magnificently with a strike rate of over 200. The right-hand batter has been able to provide a solid finish to the team by hitting big shots in the last few overs of the game which has been one of the reasons why the Men in Yellow are still in contention for a place in the playoffs. In the present scenario, the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side has won seven and lost six games in IPL 2024 so far and needs to win their last match against RCB to qualify for the playoffs.
